Workplace Etiquette for Coworking Spaces

The idea of working in a coworking space with strangers can be slightly daunting, but it doesn’t need to be. If you keep these guidelines in mind, you and everyone else in the shared space are sure to enjoy their time:

DO: Keep the common areas clean and tidy. Treat common areas with respect, so make sure to clean up any trash of yours and wipe up your spills. If you use something, such as a conference table or coffee machine, make sure to put everything back the way it was before you arrived, so it is ready for the next person to use.

DON’T: Make too much noise. Shared spaces are not the best areas to hold unplanned gatherings, take loud phone calls, or use any device that makes noise (such as a radio or white noise machine). These types of noises can be very distracting to other workers, so it is best to go to a private area or step outside for the duration, or use headphones.

DO: Network and engage with others in the office. One of the greatest benefits of going to a coworking space is that you can meet a variety of other professionals in fields you may never have run across before. Get to know your co-workers, just make sure not to take up too much of their time if they are busy!

DON’T: Ignore rules or notifications from the person in charge of the space. Rules are set in place to help everyone have the best chance of working in peace, so do not ignore them or think they do not apply to you. There are times when the space may not be available, such as for special holidays, when construction happens, or when the entire space is booked, so make sure to take note of any correspondence sent to you from the owner.

DO: Be mindful that you are in a shared space. If you book a conference table, make sure to not go over your allotted time. When you use the last of something, whether it’s paper in the printer or paper towels in the restroom, make sure to refill or replace the item. Sharing space means being considerate of the other people using the area as well!

Overall, it’s best to treat a shared space the way you treat your home – with respect and care. Other people in the coworking space are there to be your ally, not your enemy! If you are looking for a shared space to work, learn more on our website at DMGDreamCenter.com.
